Turning Up the Heat in Internal Audit – Part 3
By Jason Rohlf
If you’ve read this far, you’ve probably figured out that I hold internal audit and its professionals in very high regard. As I stated in Part 1 and Part 2 of this blog series, I am not currently a practicing internal auditor. I last held a position as a practitioner almost six years ago. However, during these last six years I have remained closely aligned with the profession as a technologist, consultant and IIA volunteer instructor. I firmly believe that internal audit is an excellent profession, and I am much better at my job for having been a part of it.
Recently, I watched an excellent TED Talk video by author Simon Sinek that has changed my perspective on my career and my life in general. Simply put, Sinek challenges companies (and by extension the people who work for them) to articulate why they do what they do, rather than simply saying, “here’s what we do.” The idea is that when the right people understand and connect to the reasons why you choose to do the things you do, these people are much more likely to want to do business with you. As Sinek elegantly states: “People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.”
I know a lot of great people who are former and current auditors, and while most of them truly love their jobs, the fact remains that they are only human. And as humans, we understand that we all have our good days and our bad days. Sometimes work is exciting, challenging and rewarding, and sometimes it is stressful, mundane or discouraging. My job is no exception. There are times when I’m inspired and energized, and there are other days when…I’m not.
So why do we do what we do at Onspring? Regardless of how positive one’s outlook may be, life comes with some level of frustration and angst. Taking this into consideration, we want our clients to look at the solutions we implement, the advice we offer and the service we provide and say, “Wow, that made my life easier/happier/less frustrating/better.” It seems like a simplistic concept, but we believe that the solutions we provide and the way we provide them can have a profoundly positive impact on those who buy WHY we do it.
And that brings me to my current role and why I do it. Recently, I was named Director of Solutions for Onspring Technologies. Onspring is a relatively new kid on the Internal Audit technology block, and frankly I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity. We have worked with several internal audit professionals to understand their goals and feel their pain, and we’ve taken that feedback to heart in developing our Audit & Assurance solution. And I couldn’t be happier about the result.
You see, we’re not just focused on what internal auditors do. We’re focused on why you do it. Our solution is purpose-built to help you become more future focused, risk driven, proficient and precise. We’re not just turning your spreadsheets into web forms. Our goal is to give you a better way to work. A better way to report. A better way to evolve and excel in your profession.
For those that we had a chance to meet at the Governance, Risk and Controls Conference this week, we certainly appreciate that you took the time to chat with us and learn more about who we are and why we want to help. If we didn’t get a chance to meet you, we encourage you to visit our website, read our blog, download our audit software buyer’s guide, request a demo or just reach out to learn more. We look forward to connecting with you.
